- Vitamin D & Prevention of Flu and Respiratory Illness
- Four years ago, I became convinced that vitamin D was unique in the vitamin world by virtue of three facts. First, it's the only known precursor of a potent steroid hormone, calcitriol, or activated vitamin D. Most other vitamins are antioxidants or co-factors in enzyme reactions. Activated vitamin D - like all steroid hormones - damasks the genome, turning protein production on and off, as your body requires. That is, vitamin D regulates genetic expression in hundreds of tissues throughout your body. This means it has as many potential mechanisms of action as genes it damasks.

- Vaccine - Volume 24, Issue 24 , 12 June 2006, Pages 5245-5250 - Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to determine whether the incidence of influenza in Ontario, Canada has decreased following the introduction of the Universal Influenza Immunization Campaign (UIIC) in 2000. All laboratory-confirmed influenza cases in Ontario, from January 1990 to August 2005 were analyzed using multitaper time series analysis. We found that there has not been a decrease in the mean monthly influenza rate following the introduction of the UIIC (109.5 (S.D. 20) versus 160 (S.D. 50.3) p › 0.1). Despite increased vaccine distribution and financial resources towards promotion, the incidence of influenza in Ontario has not decreased following the introduction of the UIIC

- A retrospective study of 5 Ontario hospitals...
- A retrospective study of 5 Ontario hospitals published in the July, 2002 issue of Canadian Journal of Emergency Medicine found that "there was no significant correlation between influenza rates and Emergency Department volumes." Data from 5 hospitals showed that, "during influenza season, acute respiratory diagnoses accounted for only 4.4% of ED visits and influenza for only 0.34% of visits." During the influenza season after the universal immunization campaign, ED visits increased at all sites. The study concluded that, "a universal influenza immunization campaign is unlikely to affect ED volume." Since 2000, Ontario has spent over $100 million on its "universal" flu vaccine program.
