An Investigation of the Association between MMR Vaccination & Autism in Denmark
by G.S. Goldman, Ph.D.; F.E.Yazbak, M.D.
Dear Friends,
Please find attached two articles from the Fall issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. They are distributed with the Editor's permission.
The "Denmark MMR Study" by Madsen and Associates (NEJM- November 2002) was co-funded by the CDC. Since its publication, it has been considered the "last word" and used to "prove" that MMR vaccination did not play any role in the recent increase in autism. The study also strongly influenced the latest IOM Special Committee report (May 2004).
Early on, I had some issues with ithe Madsen study and had expressed them. My concerns greatly increased when more data became available to me. Dr. Gary Goldman did a wonderful job with all the statistical analyses, as you will note in the first document.
In their commentary, Stott, Blaxill and Wakefield agreed with us that indeed there were problems with the Madsen research. Because they had access to more detailed data, including listings by date of birth, they were able to look at other angles
Of note is the fact that 10 months after his NEJM article, Madsen stated emphatically that autism had increased after the discontinuation of Thimerosal in Denmark (Pediatrics-September 2003).
The new evidence that we are presenting should justify a serious review by the CDC Director, the UK DOH and the IOM.
